Introduce yourself – name, age, etc.

My name is Mareli Gardner… I am 40 years of age and originally from Cape Town, but have been living in Joburg for 2 and a half years. I was a typical Capetonian, dreading the move to JHB (Husband, Grant, is a pilot and found work here), but soon I fell in love with the buzzy, vibey, eclectic and integrated energy of this amazing city! At the end of the day, it’s all about having the right attitude, hey?

Are you a makeup artist / hairstylist / stylist, or all of them?

Make-Up & Hairstylist

Which area do you run your business from?

Linden, Randburg, but only since June 2017

Do you have another job apart from the makeup/hair/styling job?  Please elaborate

I own a boutique skin care salon in Linden called Sherbet Angel. I do makeup and hair from there, as well as being mobile for shoots, weddings etc. In the salon, I do all treatments, besides nails, including permanent makeup, paramedical procedures and Micro needling.

How many years have you been in the industry?

16 years in the film industry and 1 year in the Health & Skin care industry

Tell us something you like about the industry

Working with different people, amazing locations and doing different jobs all the time… and every now and then, when vanity is not a factor, making a difference in someone’s life.

Tell us something you don’t like or would like to change about the industry
  • Over sized ego’s
  • Vanity
  • Jumping through hoops for people that don’t know what they want
  • “Hurry up and wait”
Who is your favourite celebrity you would like to work with and why?

Ooooh I have a few, purely because I have utmost respect and admiration for celebrities that use they’re voices for deeper meanings and things that make a difference. These celebrities are all environmental activists who fight for Mother Nature in their own awesome way: Cate Blanchett, Leonardo DiCaprio, Darryl Hannah, Natalie Portman, Brad Pitt and Sting to name a few.

What is your best skin care tip you can give?
  • Always remove makeup before bed
  • Apply sunscreen every day
What is your 3 must-have product is your makeup kit?
  • Concealer
  • Bronzer
  • Mascara
Which is your favourite brush/es in the Burst Brushes range?
If you could meet any living person, who would it be and why, and would you suggest a makeover for them?

I think Sir David Attenborough would blow my mind. He has dedicated his life to educating the world about the wonders of nature and in the process creating utmost awareness of the incredible, but fragile and magical place we live in. I can’t begin to imagine the places and animals he’s seen, the pristine natural wonders he has experienced and the wonderful memories he’s made. What a remarkable life he’s leading… A makeover…LOL, I don’t think so!

3 fun facts about yourself

a.       What did you want to be before you grew up?

A teacher, a model (Lol!!!) and a physiotherapist

b.      What scares you the most?

The ignorance of selfish humans towards this planet

c.       What is the biggest love of your life? (not family)

Seeing that my dog is my furry child, and makes her family, hey?

Nature and gardening…

What is one of the hardest things you had to overcome in your life?

Breast cancer at the age of 33 and again at 37… First time I just had a lumpetomy and second time a double mastectomy (they come in a pair, theyhad to go in a pair :). I’ve expercienced chemotherapy and radiation (walk in the park in comparison to chemo) twice on 2 separate occasions.

In total a year of chemo has brought me to a place where I now fight cancer every day with healthy eating, mindfulness, exercise, deep breathing and cannabis oil. I have come to believe that chemo is so poisonous, that is has the abilty to actually cause cancer. I have gathered so much information over the past 8 years, that it freaks me out every now and then, but then I become still, ask my Creator to help me do the best I can, breathe and “Let go and Let GOD”.

What is your life’s philosophy?

Be kind, everyone has a story to tell and not everyone knows what it feels like to “love and be loved in return”
